Before You Were Grandma: Leave Your Grandkids Your Voice

Your grandkids know Grandma: the hugs, the kitchen, the way the whole house feels safer when you are in it. What they do not know is the whole life behind it. The girl you were. The world you grew up in that no longer exists. The stories only you still carry.

Some of your grandchildren are not even born yet. One day they will want to know you, and the most precious thing you can leave them is not a thing at all. It is you, in your own voice, answering their questions.

Your life is a history book no one else can write.

You have seen things your grandkids will only read about. You remember people they will never meet. All of that lives in one place, your memory, and it does not have to be lost. It just has to be recorded while you are here to tell it.

It is easier than it sounds, and your family can help.

  • No writing. You answer a few questions out loud, from a phone, the way you would talk to the grandkids on the couch.
  • About a minute each. You can do them over again as many times as you like.
  • If the phone part feels like a lot, ask your son or daughter to help you start. They will be glad you asked.

Questions worth answering about your own life

  • Who were you before you were anybody's grandma?
  • What was the world like when you were a girl?
  • How did you meet the love of your life?
  • What is a family story you do not want anyone to forget?
  • What was the hardest season you ever lived through, and how did you come out of it?
  • What is a recipe, a song, or a tradition you hope stays in the family?
  • What do you know now that you wish you had known at twenty?
  • What are you proudest of?
  • What do you want your great-grandchildren to know about you?
  • Is there anything you have never told us that you would want us to know?

The simplest way to leave it to them

A journal works. A voice memo works better. But the thing families treasure is being able to see and hear you answer, and to ask you something new later. That is what The Living Mirror is: you record your real answers once, from any phone, and your family gets an interactive Mirror they can talk to, ask anything, and hear you answer back, in your own voice and face, for years, and for the grandkids not yet here.
